Looters’ list: PDP tasks FG, APC to name convicted members

PDP dismisses list, challenges APC to name convicted members

By Azimazi Momoh Jimoh, Abuja

PDP chairman, Uche Secondus
In a swift reaction to the names released as looters by the federal government, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the list as hollow and laughable, saying it was an extension of federal government’s media trial and challenged it to come up with names of its members against whom the federal government had secured convictions.

“The list put forward by the federal government as purported looters amounts to a cheap blackmail, as none of those listed have been indicted or convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction or any panel of enquiry in our country,” the party insisted.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, yesterday, said the list issued by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, only goes to show that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Presidency have no proof of corruption against the PDP.

He added: “In its frenzy and desperation, the federal government even included names of individuals who are not standing trial or under investigation for any act of corruption, as well as those who are not even PDP members.

“The Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has manifested its frenzy by going after matters that are in court and in which none of the persons have been convicted, thus betraying their wickedness and desperation to mislead the public and the court and divert attention from the heavy looting involving their members.

“We are not in doubt that the individuals he has mentioned will take their legitimate stride and pursue appropriate action in the court.

However, attacks on individuals, who are members of our party, do not in any way detract from the fact that the PDP, as a political platform, is not a party of corruption.

“It is unfortunate that the APC and its government, under whose watch, horrendous sleazes are happening on a daily basis, and a government that has failed to fulfill the littlest of its campaign promises, can spend a wholesome three years searching for flimsy allegations to discredit our party and its members.”

The statement continued: “This is a government that is yet to account for $26 billion (N9 trillion) stolen through corrupt oil contracts in the NNPC; N1.1 trillion worth of crude diverted to service APC interests; N18 billion Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), intervention fund stolen by APC officials, including their former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal; the N10 billion National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), for which members of the Buhari cabal were indicted; as well as the Mainagate, where the APC government recalled and reinstated an individual indicted for scam running into billions of naira.

“This is in addition to cover provided for serving ministers indicted for corrupt enrichment, among whom is a prominent former APC governor from the South-South, who was indicted by his state for stealing billions of naira to fund Buhari’s campaign in 2015.

“We emphatically say that the PDP is on a rebound and such flimsy allegations by the APC and its horde of looters, who stole humongous wealth from their respective states of the federation to sponsor an incompetent candidate in 2015, cannot stop us from challenging the federal government to fulfill its campaign promises.

“Since the APC has decided to draw this attack, we will no longer hold back, but appropriately commence a serialisation of all looters hiding in APC and the Presidency.”

BREAKING: FG Releases Names Of ‘Looters’

BREAKING: FG Releases Names Of ‘Looters’

PDP Chairman, Uche Secondus

The Federal Government has released a list of some of those who have allegedly looted the nation’s treasury.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammad, released the list during a press conference in Lagos on Friday.

Mohammad said the individuals include officials in the past government.

The names in the list revealed by the Federal Government include PDP chieftains who are currently being tried for corruption and financial crimes.

“The PDP has challenged us to name the looters under their watch. They said they did not loot the treasury. Well, I am sure they know that the treasury was looted dry under their watch. Yet they decided to grandstand. This shows the hollowness of their apology,” Mohammed said as he released the names.

Find the list below and the allegations against them by the Federal Government…

PDP Chairman Uche Secondus.
Allegation: On the 19th of Feb 2015, he took N200 million only from the office of the NSA.

Former PDP Financial Secretary.
Allegation: On the 24th of Oct 2014, he took N600 million only from the office of former NSA.

Former National Publicity Secretary Olisah Metuh.
On trial for allegedly collecting N1.4bn from the office of former NSA.

Dr Raymond Dokpesi, Chairman of DAAR Communications.
On trial for allegedly taking N2.1 billion from the office of the former NSA.

Former SSA to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dudafa Waripamo-Owei
On trial, over N830 million allegedly kept in accounts of four different companies.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Cousin Robert Azibaola
On Thursday, a Federal High Court ruled that he has a case to answer for allegedly collecting $40 million from the office of former NSA.

The decision by the APC-led government to reveal the names of the alleged looters and the funds allegedly stolen is in response to the opposition party, PDP’s, challenge to the government to name those alleged to have looted the country and destroyed the economy.

Mohammed said this list is just a tip of the iceberg, and the APC did not make these cases up as some of them currently have cases in court.

“They are in court and the records are available. Some of the people on this list are seeking to plea bargain, and that is a fact.

“We insist that Nigeria was looted blind under the watch of the PDP and that the starting point in tendering an apology is for them to return the loot,” he said.

Mohammad said further that the APC will not stop talking about the alleged looting by the PDP.

“We will not stop talking about the massive looting by the PDP. They brought Nigeria to this sorry pass. We are now looking around for loans to build infrastructure, and they ask us not to talk about it. We will talk about it,” he said.

Tragedy: Bodies of two Lagos pupils retrieved from flood after heavy rain

Bodies of two Lagos pupils retrieved from flood after heavy rain

Two male pupils of a private secondary school were picked up dead in the flood after a heavy rain in Alagbado area of Lagos on Thursday, witnesses confirmed.

The witnesses said the boys were found floating on water at Casso Bus Stop on Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway by shop owners and people waiting to board vehicles to their destinations.

Some commercial motorcycle riders carried them to a private hospital, which confirmed them dead.

A witness said she and others were taking shelter from the rain in a nearby shop when they noticed the floating bodies on the water.

“That was how we discovered the boys and quickly, the Okada (commercial motorcycle) riders rushed and lifted them on their shoulders, but they were lifeless because their legs and hands were just dangling,” the witness said.

One of the motorcyclists told the News Agency of Nigeria that the boys were pupils because they were in their school uniforms.

“I wonder why they should go to school today, which was declared work-free; and see how they have ended their lives just like that; it’s painful,’’ the rider said.

A sympathiser who gave his name as Gbolahan said the deceased could have been friends,

“They must be friends and attend the same school. I am sad and cannot talk now because they are dead and nothing can bring them back to life,” he expressed.

A worker in the hospital who did not want her name mentioned described the situation as painful.

She said the boys were “Brought In Dead.”

Some persons suspected to be the relatives of the boys were seen wailing and rolling on the floor of the hospital.

NAN reports that there was heavy rain in the area in the afternoon which resulted in heavy flooding.

Drugs And Substance Abuse Among Youths

EDITORIAL Drugs And Substance Abuse Among Youths

By LEADERSHIP EDITORS

Early this month, Northern Governors Forum, NGF had cause to implore the federal government to declare a state of emergency on drug abuse in the country. This came out of their worry over the increasing incidences of indulgence in psychotropic substances by youths in the North in particular and the country in general. Rising from a meeting in Kaduna, the governors disclosed that they were particularly worried that the abuse among youths was escalating in the face of the attendant physical and psychological tolls it takes on them, in spite of the various measures initiated by governments at various levels to stem the tide.

Given the speed with which the contagion of drug and substance abuse is spreading across the youth demography in the country, there is, indeed, an immense cause for worry. Abuse of psychotropic drugs such as amphetamine and narcotic drugs like codeine, tramadol and all other ethical drugs is a highway to impaired kidney, hypertension, cancer, neurological disorder, destitution and sudden death.

Cases abound this year alone of youths’ sudden death as a result of tramadol abuse. It claimed a youngman’s life in Abraka Ethiope-east local government area of Delta State. In the same Delta, a student of Army Day Secondary School, Effurun, Uvwie local government area slumped in class and died. Autopsy revealed tramodol abuse. In Ohafia local government area of Abia State, a junior secondary school student died after popping 10 tablets of tramadol. As revealed by Abia State commandant of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr. Akindele Akingbade, the teenager took it to enhance his performance in his school’s inter-house sports.

Tramadol is classified as a narcotic pain reliever for treating or moderating severe pain but youths have found a way of getting high on it through popping of excessive dosage. It also serves them as performance enhancer especially for sex. There are laws guiding the use of controlled drugs like tramadol and amphetamine in the country, what has been lacking is the enforcement of the laws. Due to high demand, dealership in psychotropic and narcotic drugs has today, become big business in the country. Just this week, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed that it seized 159 million tablets of tramadol in Apapa Port, Lagos. Director, Technical Services, NDLEA, Mr Femi Oloruntoba, in a public hearing, organised by the Senate Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics and Health in Abuja further disclosed that 50 tonnes of tramadol was recently destroyed in Kano alone. He noted that about 31 different substances are being abused in the country since 2016.

The problem of Nigeria’s porous borders and the extant rule which forbids National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from operating in the seaports share part of the blames for increased unlawful circulation of psychotropic and narcotic drugs in the country.

The key findings from drugs and substance poll conducted in July 1, 2013 by NOI Polls Limited is that the rise in drug and substance abuses in the country anchor strongly on poverty and unemployment.

Senate president, Bukola Saraki at the Senate event on drug abuse, observed that drug and substance abuses “has led to incidences of armed robbery, kidnapping, militancy and other vices which have become a challenge to internal security.” Unfortunately, he said, “some of our youths who could become the leaders of tomorrow are caught in the quagmire of substance-abuse. This is a threat to their health and wellbeing and a threat to their families so we must stem this tide.”

The abuse of substances among our youths today, include the inhalation of adhesives, which is pandemic in the North and the smoking of all manners of things that range from marijuana to human and animal waste.

Experts have found out that parental monitoring have a huge role to play in checking youth drug abuse. It is recommended that parents should monitor their adolescent children by examining their eyes, breath and body smell as well as closely keep an eye on how they react, talk, feel and their mood changes. Changes noted from any if these could serve as a red flag.

In the area of policy framework, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) mulls the idea of a prescription policy in the country, which would enable PSN know who is doing what in the area of ethical drugs sales and administration.

To also stem the tide, northern governors suggest that all state governments should set up high powered enforcement committees under the chairmanship of either the deputy governor or secretary to the state government. The committee they say, would ensure at all times the effective implemention of the relevant laws and statutory provisions in respect of drug abuse. They also enjoined state ministries of women and youth to intensify sensitization and enlightenment programmes on the dangers of drug abuse. Within the North, the governors resolved to come up with appropriate legislation through the various houses of assembly to combat drug and substances abuse in the region.
