Fake Cop Arrested in Lagos
By Chiemelie Ezeobi
The Lagos State Police Command at the weekend arrested a fake cop, one Olayiwola Animashaun, for impersonation and
terrorising unsuspecting members of the public, especially at the Surulere area of the state.
Acting on a tip-off, some policemen from the Area ‘C’ Command first gathered information about the suspect’s residence at no 34 Thomas Animashaun Street, Aguda, Surulere and went on to gather further intelligence.
According to the complainants, the suspect had been parading himself as a police officer and extorting unsuspecting members of the public of their money and other valuables.
However, at the weekend, he was intercepted under the Surulere bridge near the National Stadium, where he was about to resume his criminal activities.
On sighting the patrol team, the suspect took to his heels, but was given a hot chase which resulted to his arrest at Shitta area of Surulere.
A walkie-talkie, a Lagos State Ministry of Transportation identity card bearing his name, Olayiwola Animashaun and his passport photograph were found in his possession.
The suspect later led the detectives to his house where exhibits like a traffic taskforce reflective jacket, police statement forms, and a matchete were found and recovered.
He confessed to have once worked with Lagos State Government, but was currently without a job and his operation is centred mostly around Tejuosho, Ojuelegba and National Stadium.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, advised members of the public to be wary of some individuals who present themselves as government officials or police officers with no proof of official identification.
He also urged Lagosians to alert other security agencies when the need arises to suspect anybody, adding that the impersonator will be charged to court soon after investigation is completed.
